Interview. Christoph Reinwald, General Manager of Complex Pharmaceuticals: a conversation about supply security, new thinking in pharmaceutical production, corporate culture and leadership.
Mr Reinwald, ensuring the supply of pharmaceutical products has increasingly become a challenge in Europe and in Austria in recent years. What is causing this, and what needs to change?
The causes are varied. Over decades, production capacities were outsourced to low-cost regions for reasons of cost efficiency. At the same time, regulatory requirements in Europe have continually increased. Supply chains have become fragile, which became apparent at the latest during the COVID-19 crisis and amid geopolitical tensions. All of this has led to painful supply shortages in recent years, including in Austria.
