Europe must reclaim parts of the value chain

Shortages of medicines across Europe show that new structures in the pharmaceutical industry are urgently needed. The start-up Complex Pharmaceuticals aims to bring production expertise back to Austria and to strengthen supply security with its state-of-the-art and sustainably oriented production and packaging centre in Traiskirchen near Vienna.

Supply shortages of pharmaceutical products are now firmly part of everyday supply reality in Austria and Europe. The current political debate and the high operational burden on pharmacies and wholesale distributors illustrate how strained the situation is. Policy and regulation are sending important signals — yet it is equally becoming clear that legal frameworks alone cannot remedy structural deficiencies.
