Complex Pharmaceuticals expands its site in Lower Austria

The start-up Complex Pharmaceuticals is currently building a state-of-the-art production and packaging centre for primary pharmaceutical manufacturing in Traiskirchen, near Vienna. The company has now announced a further significant step in its growth: with six months to go before production begins, the factory floor space in Lower Austria is set to double. This move by Complex Pharmaceuticals is in response to the growing demand for flexible production, storage and logistics capacities in Europe.

Doubling of the factory floor space

South of Vienna, a site is currently taking shape that is set to help shape the future of European pharmaceutical production. The pharmaceutical start-up Complex Pharmaceuticals is establishing a modern production and packaging centre at the Tribus Logistics Park in Traiskirchen – a move designed to strengthen the company’s supply security. The site was developed by Propel Industries. Complex Pharmaceuticals has secured a long-term lease for 50 per cent of the space here.

Strong demand for regional availability

The fact that demand for regional production and availability is rising sharply is demonstrated not least by the company’s current expansion: more than half a year before the planned start of production, Complex Pharmaceuticals is expanding its site in Lower Austria and doubling its current production area from around 7,800 to a total of 15,200 square metres.

“Although we won’t be fully operational until 2027, we are already seeing strong demand for additional storage capacity,” says Christoph Reinwald, General Manager of Complex Pharmaceuticals. “For this reason, we are taking the next step earlier than planned and are already beginning the strategic expansion of our site.”

Investing in the future

A further property measuring approximately 7,400 square metres has been leased on the same industrial estate. The existing facility, which focuses on the manufacture of secondary packaging, will thus be expanded to include a central warehouse with a total of 10,000 pallet spaces for contract clients in the ambient sector – that is, the storage of medicines within a controlled room temperature range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius – as well as additional office space. Furthermore, according to the company, the site expansion is intended to create space for the implementation of further projects and services for international contract clients. The schedule is tight: conversion of the new property will begin in August, with completion planned for January 2027.

Production, packaging and logistics at a single site

Meanwhile, the refurbishment of the first site is progressing according to plan: the first packaging line is scheduled to come on stream by the end of the year, with full capacity expected from January 2027. The site will then be used to manufacture pharmaceutical secondary packaging as well as to carry out parts of the medicines production process.

With the expansion of the premises, the warehousing and logistics functions are now also being significantly enhanced. “Our expansion offers our contract manufacturing clients, in particular, the advantage of storing and processing products directly on site. This reduces transport distances and greatly increases flexibility in the supply chain,” says Reinwald. In doing so, the General Manager highlights aspects that are integral to his vision of modern, agile and more regionally anchored pharmaceutical production.

Expansion continues

However, the site’s development is not complete with this latest expansion. Rather, Complex Pharmaceuticals is laying the foundations for further growth in the coming years. The aim is to establish an integrated pharmaceutical site that can respond flexibly to market demands: “Traiskirchen is set to become, step by step, a high-performance centre for pharmaceutical services in the heart of Europe,” concludes Reinwald.

At Complex Pharmaceuticals, the focus is on expansion: the pharmaceutical start-up is doubling its production space in Traiskirchen. From August, production and packaging facilities will be supplemented by additional storage space.
