Rare diseases – Orphan diseases

Rare diseases –
Orphan Diseases

Although rare diseases are not very widespread when considered individually, they occur frequently overall and can affect all organ systems. Those affected are among the most underserved patient groups worldwide.

In Austria, this affects one in 20 people – a total of around 500,000 people. In comparison, cardiovascular diseases affect around 300,000 Austrians. Despite the low number of cases, there are numerous established medicines and therapies available for these conditions – a supply-gap that has yet to be closed when it comes to rare diseases.

Orphan drugs only account for a small proportion of total drug expenditures. Due to the small patient population, the costs of the long-term development of an orphan drug must be recouped through a limited number of prescriptions. Consequently, the price of such a drug must be higher than that of a pharmaceutical product which is used by a large number of patients. No comprehensive figures are available for Austria, but in Germany, which is a comparable market, the gross cost share of orphan drug finished products covered by health insurance funds is only 5.4%.
