Between site development and operational preparation: insights into the set-up phase

Insights from General Manager Christoph Reinwald

“Developing a new pharmaceutical site requires the simultaneous management of both strategic and operational areas. Whilst long-term decisions lay the foundations for future growth, day-to-day operations focus on implementing complex projects, establishing robust processes and building efficient structures.

At Complex Pharmaceuticals, we are currently in a crucial phase of development. Until the planned start of full operations in January 2027, my priority as General Manager is to coordinate key areas such as site development, engineering, supply chain management and staff recruitment.”

Expanding infrastructure to meet future requirements

“A key focus at present is on expanding our site in Traiskirchen, south of Vienna. By increasing our operational space to a total of 15,200 square metres at this early stage, we are creating the infrastructural conditions necessary to meet the future requirements of our customers and the market.

The focus here is on establishing a modern central warehouse with a capacity of 10,000 pallet spaces in a controlled ambient temperature range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. At the same time, logistical processes and material flows are being designed to ensure efficient integration between warehousing, packaging processes and dispatch.

By consolidating these functions at a single site, we are creating integrated processes that enable high operational efficiency and short response times.”

Technical Planning and Quality Assurance

“In parallel with the expansion of our site, we are pressing ahead with the technical design of our production and packaging infrastructure. Whilst the refurbishment work is progressing according to plan, the final specifications for the first packaging line – which is scheduled to come on stream at the end of this year – are being finalised.

Particular emphasis is being placed on the development of flexible and scalable processes. The requirements of the pharmaceutical contract manufacturing sector call for solutions that can efficiently accommodate different product formats and customer requirements.

Right from the planning and implementation phase, all processes are designed in accordance with applicable GMP requirements and established quality standards. The aim is to create a robust foundation for safe and reliable operations right from the start.”

The human factor as the foundation of sustainable success

“Alongside infrastructure and technology, building a skilled and committed team is a key component of site development. The successful commissioning of a new site requires that responsibilities are clearly defined and that staff are provided with the necessary framework to act independently.

That is why ongoing dialogue with existing and future staff plays an important role in my day-to-day work. The focus is on transparent communication, constructive collaboration and the joint development of processes and structures.

Particularly during the set-up phase, experience gained from day-to-day operations provides valuable insights that help to continuously optimise processes and develop the organisation in a sustainable manner.”

Conclusion

“The current phase is characterised by intensive project work and the gradual implementation of a long-term vision. By expanding our site, we are laying the foundations for modern pharmaceutical services across the value chain and strengthening our ability to meet customer requirements flexibly and reliably.

Developing a new site offers the opportunity to design processes, infrastructure and corporate culture with the future in mind right from the start. This forms the basis for sustainable growth and long-term success.”
